Jerusalem – An Israeli security official said Tuesday that the chief of Hamas’s military wing, the Islamist group’s armed wing and its political wing will be at the United Nations General Assembly for a three-day conference on the Middle East.
The statement from the military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not specify what the conference would be about or whether the chief would address the United States or any other member nation.
The United States, Britain, France, Russia, Germany, China and Turkey have all called for Hamas to recognize Israel and halt its violence against civilians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Hamas says its armed wing has fought alongside Israel in the conflict.
It says the West Bank is under its control and that it is committed to fighting the Israeli military.
