President Donald Trump on Monday is set to announce a plan to remove U.N.-authorized ships from the Indian Ocean and “renegotiate” an international agreement that would require Washington to do so, a senior administration official said.
Trump’s decision will be announced at a White House news conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the plan has not yet been announced.
The White House said the U.K. will also begin negotiations with Washington over a treaty it signed in February with the United States, the senior administration officials said.
The Trump administration has repeatedly said it would reverse U.H.O. actions against Chinese ships in the South China Sea and other contested waters in the western Pacific.
It has also been criticized by China for its aggressive actions in the region.
The U.A.E. is also in talks with the U, ASEAN and others to end the U-boat dispute that has divided the region since it began in 2010.
